THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE
Learning and fun for older people no longer in full-time employment
'U3A' stands for 'University of The Third Age'. It's not a university in the usual sense.
Instead, it consists of self-help, self-managed, lifelong learning co-operatives all over the UK.
Each local U3A is a charity run entirely by volunteers. York U3A serves the area around York city.
Yes we learn, but we're more interested in having fun than gaining qualifications.
We have monthly talks/meetings, trips and activities. But the real life of U3A is in the interest groups, which meet in different places.
Our Groups can cover both 'Study' topics (in general running from September to July, with members usually subscribing in September) and those which are more 'Leisure' orientated (which may be joined at any stage).
Once a member, you can join as many groups as you like, provided there is capacity.
Membership is currently £17, renewed each August, with a discounted rate from January 1st for new members who join part way through the year.

With around 1800 members and a very active committee, we are one of the largest U3As in the country.
Whilst we are proud of the range of our activities, we are not complacent.
There is always room for new ideas - so maybe there is something that you can offer us?
